From the 25th of March 2010 until the 24th March 2012 the Government introduced an exemption from Stamp Duty for all first time buyers. This is only relevant if the property you are purchasing is less than 250,000.00.

So what is HM Revenue & Customs' definition of a first-time buyer?

"A person who has not acquired a freehold or leasehold interest in residential property in the United Kingdom or an equivalent interest anywhere else in the world." In other words, you don't qualify for stamp duty exemption if you have owned a property anywhere in the world. HM Revenue & Customs states that the buyers "must intend to occupy the property as their only or main residence". So it doesn't apply to second homes or buy-to-let properties.
